Hundreds of athletes took to the streets, promenade and seafront of Llandudno over the weekend for the annual Wild Horse Brewing Co. Llandudno Triathlon series, featuring Standard, Sprint and Duathlon races as part of a packed multi-discipline event on the North Wales coast.

The event, which combined elite competition with mass participation, attracted competitors from across the UK and beyond, with strong performances across all categories and challenging but favourable coastal conditions for much of the racing.

In the Standard Triathlon (750m swim, 34.7km bike, 9.4km run), Lewis Cherry claimed victory in the open category in a time of 1:54:11, followed by Ross Hosking in 1:56:47 and Simon Cole in 1:59:15.

In the female category, Miriam Gilbride took the win in 2:11:01, ahead of Victoria Reed (2:12:57) and Lucy Marland (2:13:13).

The Standard race also formed part of the Celtic Cup, bringing together some of the strongest age-group athletes from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Team Cymru secured overall honours in the competition.

The Sprint Triathlon (500m swim, 17.5km bike, 5km run) delivered fast-paced racing along the seafront course. Zachary Beddows stormed to victory in the open category in 58:23, with Gruffudd Lewis and Dylan Gwynne-Jones completing the podium.

In the women’s sprint race, Rhian Roxburgh continued her strong form on home roads to take first place in 1:08:15, followed by Katie Evans and Victoria Cole.

The Sprint event also formed Stage 2 of the Welsh Triathlon Super Series, with Beddows securing the men’s title on the day and Roxburgh underlining her dominance in the women’s competition.

In the Standard Duathlon (5km run, 34.7km bike, 9.4km run), Matthew Nelson claimed victory in 2:00:36, ahead of John Macdonald and Phil Ellison. Tamina Oliver topped the women’s field in 2:19:41, with Lauren Robinson and Eleanor Ashcroft rounding out the podium places.

The Duathlon also served as a World Triathlon Standard Distance Duathlon Qualifier, offering athletes a pathway to the 2027 World Triathlon Standard Distance Duathlon Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

The entire weekend formed part of a wider celebration of endurance sport in the town and was filmed for the upcoming television series Triathlon Cymru, due to air on S4C and BBC iPlayer from 17 July.

However, sadly the event was also affected by a serious incident on Sunday morning.

An air ambulance was called to North Parade following an incident involving a competitor and a spectator during the triathlon. Emergency services attended the scene, and two people were subsequently taken to hospital by road ambulance.

Organisers have thanked emergency crews for their swift response and said their thoughts are with those involved, while the circumstances surrounding the incident are understood to be under investigation.
