Llandudno Post Office future in doubt after store closure

The future of Llandudno’s main Post Office has been called into question following the announcement that the TG Jones store on Mostyn Street is due to close permanently in 2027.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Bangor Conwy Môn, has written to the Chief Executive of Post Office Limited, warning that the loss of the branch could leave residents, visitors and businesses without an accessible full-service Post Office in the town centre.

The Post Office operates from within the TG Jones store, meaning its future is directly affected by the retailer’s planned closure.

In her letter, dated 26 October, Mrs Finch-Saunders called for urgent assurances that a full-service branch would be retained in central Llandudno, preferably on or close to Mostyn Street.

She has also asked what discussions have taken place with TG Jones, prospective retailers or other operators to find suitable replacement premises and prevent a gap in services.

The only remaining counter service in the immediate area is understood to be a smaller branch inside the One Stop store at West Shore. Mrs Finch-Saunders said it was already very busy and raised concerns about whether it could cope with additional demand if the town centre branch closed.

The Llandudno branch provides access to cash withdrawals and deposits, bill payments, parcel services and other face-to-face facilities used by residents and local businesses.

Mrs Finch-Saunders said the loss of these services would be particularly concerning for older and vulnerable people, as well as customers who do not use online banking or cannot easily access digital services.

She said: “The closure of the Post Office will deal a devastating blow to the local area, with many residents, visitors and businesses relying on the branch.”

She added that it was essential to protect access to services for people who could not rely on online banking.

The MS has also asked Post Office Limited what assessment has been made of the potential impact on residents, visitors, staff and local businesses, particularly those who depend on face-to-face banking services.

The concerns follow the announcement of the planned closure of the TG Jones store itself, which has raised wider questions about the future of an established retail premises on one of Llandudno’s main shopping streets.

Mrs Finch-Saunders said she would do everything in her power to support efforts to secure the branch’s future and called for an urgent and substantive response from the Post Office. She has also offered to meet representatives to discuss the options available.

No replacement premises or alternative full-service town centre branch have been confirmed in the information provided.

The key question now is whether a new location can be secured before the existing branch closes in 2027, avoiding a break in provision for the people and businesses that depend on it.
