Thousands of people across North Wales will be able to step into the nation’s past for free this St David’s Day, as Cadw releases 10,000 free tickets to historic sites across the country.

On 1 March, entry will be free to 17 of Cadw’s admission-charging properties — including some of North Wales’ most iconic landmarks.

In the region, visitors can explore mighty medieval fortresses such as Conwy Castle, Caernarfon Castle, Harlech Castle and Beaumaris Castle — all part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Edward I’s castles in Gwynedd.

Other North Wales sites in Cadw’s care include Castell y Bere near Tywyn, Denbigh Castle and the atmospheric ruins of Rhuddlan Castle. These landmarks, which normally charge admission, will be open free of charge to those who book in advance.

Instead of paying for entry, visitors are encouraged — though not obliged — to make a voluntary donation to Wales Air Ambulance, the pan-Wales charity which provides life-saving critical care 24 hours a day. Since launching in 2001, the service has carried out more than 55,000 missions, including many across rural and coastal North Wales.

First Minister Eluned Morgan said St David’s Day was an important opportunity to celebrate Wales’ unique identity and culture.

“Visiting a Cadw site is a fantastic way to celebrate Dydd Gŵyl Dewi and learn more about Wales’ incredible history,” she said.

Culture Minister Jack Sargeant urged people to book early to avoid disappointment.

Some sites, including Plas Mawr and Castell Coch in South Wales, have strict limits on ticket numbers — and popular North Wales castles are also expected to fill up quickly.
