‘Flood Mary’ highlights free Flood Recovery Guide to support households after Storm Chandra flooding.

As communities begin the difficult clean-up following the widespread flooding caused by Storm Chandra, property flood resilience advocate Mary Long-Dhonau OBE – known as ‘Flood Mary’ – is reminding people that practical help and guidance is available for those starting the recovery process after internal flooding.

Mary is pointing households towards her free Flood Recovery Guide, sponsored by Ageas, which provides clear, step-by-step advice for the early days and weeks after a flood.

The guide was created following Mary’s own experience of flooding and years spent supporting households across the UK as they navigate the long and emotion road to recovery.

Mary Long-Dhonau OBE said: “When you first walk back into a flooded home, it can feel overwhelming. The smell, the mess, the damage; it’s hard to know where to begin. This guide is designed to give people a clear starting point in the first bleak days of recovery and help them to avoid some of the common mistakes that can make recovery harder.”

The Flood Recovery Guide includes:

What to do before you step back into your property
How to deal with contaminated water and damaged belongings safely
Practical advice on working with loss adjusters and insurers
Tips for drying out your home properly to avoid longer-term problems
How to think about making your property more flood resilient and recoverable during reinstatement.

Adds Mary: “I often hear people say, ‘I wish I’d known that at the start.’ This guide brings together the things people most wish they had known in those first few days. I encourage anyone who has been affected to share the guide with neighbours, friends and family who may also be beginning their recovery journey.”
