Three people have been taken to hospital following a serious collision on the A55 at the Conwy Tunnel, which has forced the major route to close in both directions.
North Wales Police confirmed the road is shut between the Penmaenmawr Tunnel and the Conwy Tunnel, warning motorists that the closure is expected to remain in place for some time. The force said diversions are in place and urged drivers to avoid the area due to severe disruption.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before midday.
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at approximately 11.59am to reports of a road traffic collision on the A55. We sent four Emergency Ambulances and two Cymru High Acuity Response Units to the scene. Further support was offered by four off-duty paramedics. Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in three Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopters. Three patients were transferred to hospital for further treatment.”
Traffic Wales described the incident as a serious collision and reported extensive congestion across surrounding routes, with queues stretching back towards Colwyn Bay. Surrounding roads around Llandudno Junction have also become heavily congested as traffic seeks alternative routes.
The A547 Bangor Road has been closed in both directions to allow helicopters to land and to provide emergency service access to the scene. Traffic Wales said this was necessary to assist air ambulance activity above the junction.
Motorists are being advised to plan ahead, expect major delays and avoid travelling through the Conwy Tunnel area until further notice. Further updates are expected from police as the incident continues to be dealt with.
