RGC 31 Llandovery 41
SRC Round 3
27 September 2025
RGC are still waiting for their first home win of the season, after a below-par opening 40 minutes in which the visitors ran in 5 tries.
From the kick off, Llandovery were on the front foot, and within a minute they were ahead after some phases before smashing over for the try. Ioan Hughes converted.
The Gogs looked to answer back, with Connor Dever and Sam Williams both making some inroads with the ball in hand.
Billy McBryde attempted a penalty from the tee, but it didn't have the distance.
Again, RGC looked good with the ball, with a strong Delwyn Jones run before Billy McBryde was tackled into touch. The fly-half was replaced soon after with an injury.
It was 2 tries when Adam Warren found himself in space, and he crossed the line.
Next score went to RGC when Dion Jones got his driver out and smashed the penalty between the posts from halfway.
The game was scrappy from an RGC perspective, with a few loose passes and kicks too long, and the visitors took full advantage.
Drovers scrum-half was finding luck with some clever kicks, and insightful running, and it was no surprise when he took a quick tap, it ended with a try and simple conversion for Hughes.
A minute later, it was the BP score, when Rees again made a break and his kick set up winger Llein Morgan to chase to the corner before dabbing down.
RGC needed something to cling onto, and replacement Osian Llewelyn, on the breakaway, raced from his own half to score. Dion Jones was one target with extras.
The crowd were silenced when Llandovery grabbed try number 5 from Jordon Evans close range, and Hughes converted.
As the game neared halftime, RGC edged to the line before Hughes was shown a yellow for entering from the side. With the extra man, the Gogs looked to find space, but frustratingly, the ball found the hands of a Drover who eased the building pressure.
The Gogs needed a big 2nd half, and it couldn't start much better than with a Caio Parry try and Dion Jones conversion.
They needed to build on that, but similar to Cardiff last time out at Stadiwm CSM, they let the visitors back in when Llein Morgan chipped into space and took full advantage to collect and score. Again, Hughes added the 2 points.
The scrum and breakdown was a bit of a lottery, and on most occasions, RGC didn't have the winning ticket and were being penalised.
Delwyn and Dion Jones combined to open up the Drovers, taking the ball a fair way down the field, causing some scrambling defence.
The Gogs were often masters of their own downfall, with knock-ons and turnovers costing them.
Replacement scrum-half Tudur Jones made a clever kick wide and winger Louis Williams was wedged into the touchline, before bumping 2 Drovers players setting up an attack.
They did get to the line, but a knock on gave the ball back to Llandovery.
Next time they visited the whitewash, they did come away with the try from Dafydd Thirsk and a Dion Jones conversion.
The scoreboard ticked over with another Hughes penalty from Llandovery.
Llandovery tried their luck again with an attacking maul, but this time RGC dug the ball out of the bunker of players to keep them out.
As the game entered the last few minutes, RGC entered the Drovers' 22, with James Jones claiming the BP try. With Dion Jones' boot on point for the extras.
Centre Delwyn Jones “It was the poor first half that cost us, which we were 10-31 down. We outscored them in the 2nd half (21-10), but we couldn't recover from the opening 40 minutes. We know we head to Llandovery next week for the reverse fixture, so we need to regroup and work together this week”
