A postmortem has confirmed that the baby whose body was found on the Bangor coastline was a little girl.
North Wales Police says initial indications suggest she may have been in the water for up to several weeks.
Further tests are now being carried out to establish more information about the baby and the circumstances surrounding her death.
The baby's body was discovered near the Siliwen Road area of Bangor shortly before 5pm on Sunday, September 27.
Superintendent Llinos Davies has made a direct appeal to the baby's mother to come forward, saying officers understand she may be frightened but that her welfare and safety are their main concern.
Police are also asking anyone who is concerned about a woman or girl who may have been pregnant, or whose behaviour has changed significantly in recent months, to get in touch.
All information will be treated with discretion, and police say names provided can be quickly ruled out if the person is not the mother.
Fiona Giraud, Director of Midwifery and Women's Services at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, has also appealed directly to the mother, stressing that support and medical care are available.
She said the priority was to find her, make sure she was safe and ensure she received any medical attention and support she might need.
Police say they are continuing to receive specialist advice as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information is asked to contact North Wales Police on 101, quoting Operation Melex. Information can also be submitted through the Major Incident Public Portal.
