Welsh Conservative leader and Clwyd MS Darren Millar is urging people across North Wales to get behind this year’s Prostate Cymru Walk of Wales in a bid to raise awareness and vital funds for men’s cancer care.
The nationwide event aims to bring together residents, businesses, families and community groups to support those affected by prostate cancer while raising money for specialist NHS cancer nurses across Wales.
Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer affecting men in the UK, with around one in eight men diagnosed during their lifetime. The risk rises to one in four for Black men and one in three for those with a family history of the disease.
This year, Prostate Cymru has set a fundraising target of £300,000, with every penny going towards funding specialist prostate cancer nurses within Welsh health boards.
The charity says the funding will help ensure men diagnosed with prostate cancer in Wales can access expert and compassionate support from the very beginning of their treatment journey.
Encouraging people in Clwyd and across the region to get involved, Darren Millar said the event was an important opportunity to support families affected by the disease and raise awareness around men’s health.
“Prostate cancer affects far too many families across Wales,” he said.
“Events like the Prostate Cymru Walk of Wales not only raise vital funds, but also help raise awareness and encourage important conversations around men’s health.
“I encourage everyone who can to take part, support the walkers and help make a real difference.”
The Walk of Wales is open to people of all ages and abilities, whether participants are walking in memory of a loved one, supporting somebody currently undergoing treatment or simply wanting to back a worthwhile cause.
Prostate Cymru says the event is designed to unite communities across Wales while helping improve cancer care and support services for men facing prostate disease.
People wanting to take part can register through Prostate Cymru’s official Walk of Wales page.
