North Wales finalists among inspirational St. David line-up

Several people with strong North Wales connections have been named among the finalists for the 2026 St David Awards, Wales’ national honours celebrating outstanding achievement and service.

The finalists were announced this week by First Minister Eluned Morgan ahead of the ceremony at the Senedd in Cardiff on Thursday 26 February.

Now in its 13th year, the awards have recognised more than 300 inspirational individuals and groups from across the country.

North Wales is represented across a number of categories, including Sport, Volunteering and Public Service.

Among those shortlisted is Alan Williams, a sailing coach based in North Wales, who has been recognised in the Sport category for his commitment to developing and inspiring athletes. His nomination places him alongside some of Wales’ most well-known sporting figures, underlining the national significance of his contribution.

In the Volunteering category, Brian Jones has been selected as a finalist for his work with British International Search and Rescue Dogs. His dedication to training and deploying volunteer rescue dogs has supported emergency response efforts, reflecting the vital role volunteers play in helping communities, particularly in rural and coastal areas like those found across North Wales.

Also representing the region is Innes Robinson, a headteacher from North Wales, who has been named a finalist in the Public Service category. Robinson has been recognised for his leadership in education and his work supporting wellbeing and inclusion, highlighting the lasting impact schools and educators have within local communities.

The St David Awards feature 11 categories, ranging from Business and Culture to Environment Champion and Young Person, with finalists chosen by an independent panel and winners selected by the First Minister.

Eluned Morgan said it was a privilege to announce this year’s shortlist, describing it as a powerful reminder of the positive difference people across Wales make to others’ lives.

All winners will receive a specially designed trophy created by Lampeter-based ceramicist Daniel Boyle, with the national celebration set to take place in Cardiff.
