An investigation into the crash of an RAF training aircraft on Anglesey has reportedly found that the jet took off with its fuel cap missing.
The Hawk T2 aircraft crashed near Llanfaelog on 23 September, shortly after take-off, with both pilots ejecting safely. They were treated for injuries believed to be minor.
The reported finding was published by The Sun newspaper, which claimed investigators had established that the fuel cap had been left off before the flight.
However, the RAF has not publicly confirmed the report, and the cause of the crash has not been officially established.
The aircraft came down in farmland close to Pencarnisiog and Afallon Caravan Park, near Llanfaelog. Both crew members escaped by parachute before the jet hit the ground and was destroyed in the resulting fire.
The flight was reportedly a test flight following an earlier incident involving the same aircraft on 11 September.
Following the crash, the RAF temporarily suspended flying operations involving its Hawk T1 and Hawk T2 fleets while initial checks were carried out. The suspension was lifted on 8 October, although the formal investigation is continuing.
The Defence Accident Investigation Branch is examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. Until its findings are published, the reported fuel-cap issue remains unconfirmed by the RAF.
