A £19.7 million transformation of Venue Cymru has moved a step closer after Ambition North Wales approved a major funding package aimed at securing the future of one of Wales’s largest arts and entertainment venues.
The Outline Business Case for £5 million in Growth Deal funding has now been approved for the Venue Cymru Futures project, paving the way for the next stage of funding through the North Wales Growth Deal’s Agri-Food and Tourism Programme.
The ambitious redevelopment will modernise the 31-year-old venue and create a new cultural hub designed to support collaboration between businesses, artists, organisations and communities across North Wales.
The overall project requires £19.7 million in capital investment, with match funding of £14.7 million coming from the UK Government, Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns fund and the Arts Council of Wales.
The redevelopment aims to safeguard the long-term future of Venue Cymru while boosting the regional economy through jobs, training and innovation in the creative industries.
Plans include the creation of 59 new jobs by 2036 and training and engagement opportunities for around 350 people. The project will also deliver 900 square metres of new flexible space, including a new stage docking lobby and refurbished auditorium, bar and restaurant facilities.
The improvements are expected to attract larger productions, concerts and events to Llandudno, drawing in audiences from across Wales and beyond while supporting the area’s tourism economy.
Cllr Mark Pritchard, Chair of Ambition North Wales, said Venue Cymru played a “critical role” in the region’s cultural and economic life.
“This investment will future proof a much-loved asset, create new jobs, drive innovation in the creative industries and protect vital services for residents and visitors,” he said.
“We are proud to support a project that delivers directly against our Growth Deal priorities.”
Cllr Julie Fallon, Leader of Conwy County Borough Council and lead member for Ambition North Wales’s Agri-food and Tourism Programme, described the plans as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity”.
“The redevelopment will not only upgrade the building but make it a space for everyone, supporting local businesses and creating new opportunities for young people,” she said.
“This project ensures Venue Cymru can remain competitive, financially resilient and fit for future generations.”
Subject to final approvals, including the Full Business Case, construction work is expected to begin in 2026, with phased completion from 2027 and the full opening of the new cultural hub scheduled for 2028.
