Artists invited to bring Terry's legacy to life at Bay events

Artists are being invited to play a key role in a vibrant programme of culture and celebration in Colwyn Bay, following the unveiling of a new tribute to comedy legend Terry Jones this weekend.

The new sculpture, created by Nick Elphick, is set to be officially unveiled on Saturday, April 25, and is expected to become a lasting cultural landmark on the town’s seafront.

In the weeks that follow, Conwy County Borough Council is seeking an artist to deliver two family-friendly, drop-in creative sessions during two major events – Prom Xtra on Saturday, May 9, and Colwyn Bay Pride on Sunday, May 10.

The sessions will be inspired by Jones’ life and work, particularly his much-loved children’s books including Erik the Viking and The Fantastic World of Terry Jones: Animal Tales, Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories. Organisers are keen to create engaging, accessible activities that will appeal to families attending what are expected to be busy outdoor events.

The activity will take place at Conwy’s Culture and Library stand, with organisers open to a wide range of creative ideas suited to a lively seafront setting.

A fee of £300 per day is being offered, inclusive of materials, and artists are invited to submit a short proposal outlining their concept and experience by April 27.

The call-out comes as Colwyn Bay builds momentum for a packed spring programme. Prom Xtra has become a well-established fixture on the town’s calendar, bringing live entertainment, community stalls and family activities to the promenade, while Colwyn Bay Pride continues to grow as a colourful celebration of inclusivity and diversity in North Wales.

This year’s Pride event is again expected to attract strong crowds, combining music, performance and community spirit in a seaside setting.

With the unveiling of the Terry Jones statue marking a significant cultural moment for the town, organisers say the linked creative sessions offer a unique opportunity for an artist to engage the public and celebrate the legacy of one of North Wales’ most recognisable creative figures.

Artists interested in taking part are encouraged to send a proposal of no more than one page, detailing their idea and experience, to creu@conwy.gov.uk before the closing date of April 27.
